A New Season, New Faces, and Familiar Foes
The Kekaulike Na Alii are looking forward to a new year with some new faces to the staff. "I'm really excited to welcome Coaches Kyle Sanches and Sean Higuchi to our staff.", Coach Higa continued, "Having two youthful, energetic, and knowledgable coaches like these are a blessing. You can't ask for more, two upcountry guys returning home - it just fits you know, had Kekaulike been here when they were in high school, this would've been their home. I'm just honored to be surrounded by a group of great guys but most importantly, great coaches."
Kekaulike will also be facing some familiar faces during the pre-season. "We have a great opportunity to open with Roosevelt from the OIA Red Division (Oahu Interscholastic League) as we have had a long standing relationship with them for years. We've camped with them in the early 00's and their head coach Pat Silva has Kekaulike ties.", Coach Higa continued, "I coached the running backs for Coach Pat in the mid nineties when we were together at Castle (Silva was the head coach then), and then he coached here for me during my interim as head coach in '99. Some of Silva's current staffers also played for me at Castle. We now have the opportunity to coach against one another, there's no secrets here. It'll be fun and we're looking forward to it."
Kauai High will also be visiting the Valley Isle in the second part of their home and home. "We played Kauai last year over there last season. I've said it once and I'll say it again, Kauai is a Division II classified program who plays and competes at the D-I level. They're going to be really good and I think will contend for this season's KIF (Kauai Interscholastic Federation) Championship."
